Sunday, June 12, 2011: THE TRAVELLING MABELS
Sometimes one is privileged to witness something they will never forget.
This afternoon, , my wife and I drove the Cowboy Trail out to the Longview Community Hall. We stopped in to the Longview Hotel for a bite to eat and then drove a few kilometers away to the Community Hall to hear “The Travelling Mabels”. The Mabels are a trio of exceptional female singers: vocalist, guitarist Eva Levesque, her daughter Suzanne on vocals and bass guitar and Lana Floen – guitar and vocals. Keith Floen on keys is their music director – and a very good one to be sure
Their album is one I play frequently – but their live sound is something to witness. If you love the sound of the “Secret Sisters” – you’ll love “The Travelling Mabels”. One song in their set – the one written for them by Canadian singer/songwriter icon Ian Tyson – was performed by the man himself today. The audience stood in respect as Ian Tyson approached the stage and stood again after his performance of “Song in a Dream” with the Mabels.
It was a pleasure to meet with them after the show – I’m fortunate to work with Lana – the vocal sound of the trio was exceptional.
Watch for “The Travelling Mabels” – they have a busy upcoming schedule. On Thursday, June 16 at 8 pm on CBC television, they will be performing alongside some great Canadian musicians in the Slave Lake Benefit Concert.
