Wednesday, March 30, 2011: MEAGHAN SMITH
Singer/songwriter Meaghan Smith is the 2011 Juno Award recipient for New Artist of the Year. That’s no surprise to those who have enjoyed her music for the past few years. She’s a true artist – she sings, songwrites and paints “miniature” pieces.
Her website “bio” is an entertaining read. It begins, “Hi. I’m Meaghan Smith. I am a singer. I’ve always been a singer. My parents say I was born screaming and hollering, but I like to think I was born singing. With three sisters, my mum, dad, and myself all under one roof, our home was bursting at the seams with people and, most importantly, music….”
Our Revv52 show in May last year featured Meaghan, her husband Jason and an excellent band led by producer/drummer Ashwin Sood. The May concert was so much fun for all of us – we shared the song arrangements by mp3 over a three month period and then the day of the show did an early morning Calgary television breakfast show, rehearsed together in the afternoon with the band and members of Revv52 and performed that night.
Meaghan is so much fun to work with – easy going and refreshingly talented! The audience loved the show. She was fearless in selecting covers along with her own great material – covers like “Teardrop” from Massive Attack, “If I Only Had a Heart” and “I’m Just a Gigolo”. All the arrangements were prepared by Calgary singer/songwriter Steve Pineo and San Francisco based Deke Sharon (Sing-Off on NBC).
I’m happy for Meaghan – she’s the new kind of talent on the Canadian landscape.
